Land Mermaid!

     I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT I ONLY HAVE TWO WEEKS LEFT! It is crazy how fast this week went and I am sure that the next two will only go faster! This week has been filled with activities that are helping us produce our final projects. Each intern has to have a final report, PowerPoint presentation, and poster. Most of us are doing all of these for the first time so we appreciate all of the help we are getting! On Monday, we had another REU group come in and we did some collaborative seminars that taught us how to write elevator pitches and how to best make a resume. These activities were very informative and it was neat to meet more interns. Friday was anther seminar day. We had a two part communications seminar where we learned how to make a good PowerPoint presentation and a good research poster. All of the interns got a lot of work done at this seminar and it helped me a lot! Right now, I am about half way done with both my poster and presentation. The posters are due next Wednesday and the presentations are due as soon as we present. I still have a lot of work to do on those and hope to be very productive this weekend!

     Last weekend some of the other girls and I went to the mall. We went in the afternoon and just wanted it to be a short little trip. Unfortunately, we have to rely on the bus system and their times do not always match with our ideal plans. We were supposed to get on a bus at the bus terminal on our way back to campus. As we sat and waited for 45 minutes we heard several other bus numbers called over the intercom. We put a lot of trust into the announcements and lost track of time as we were reminiscing over our first years of college. As we looked out the window at 7:15pm we watched our bus leave without us.  The next bus leaving for UMES was at 9:40 and one of the girls with us was from a different internship and she had a curfew that she had respect. Now we were in a real pickle. We called the customer service number that we had and talked to a lady named Debbie. Before we knew it she was telling us that she would take us to UMES in her personal vehicle just as soon as she got off work. We were surprised at first but clearly out of options so we graciously accepted the ride. Although it is not recommended to take a ride from strangers, we felt safe as a group and were ultimately just very grateful that we were getting back to campus!

     As many of you know, last November I died  a chunk of my hair blue and since then I have changed the color a few times. My hair has been blue, purple pink, and red. I am willing to dye it just about any color and while we were at the mall we found a bunch of fun colors! I decided to go with green once we got back to the dorm a couple of the girls and I dyed our hair. I am still getting used to the green but as for now I like it a lot and my roommate back at home said I looked like a "land mermaid!"
      I had a really good week and will really miss this place and the people that I have met since I have been here. This adventure is quickly coming to a close but the next journey is about to begin at East Central University!

Happy New Year!!! Goals and I have had an interesting past. Every year I seem to make more goals than I can even keep track of and by February I am overwhelmed and discouraged. I can't even remember if I made any goals for 2017 and if I did, I certainly didn't keep them. "Kate is a DISASTER at the beach!"

     Hi guys! I had a really good weekend full of fun adventures and am so excited to tell you about them! Okay, the interns here have kind of started this thing that we like to call "Fire Fridays." Every Friday we go out to a fire pit here on campus and have a bonfire complete with smores! It is always a lot of fun. We eat, chat, sing, and dance! We weren't out too late last Friday because we had a field trip on Saturday but it was still an adventurous night! Assateague Island. Beautiful! A stamp for my family's National Park Passport.      Saturday was nice because we got to sleep in and then left for our field trip at noon. We went to Assateague Island and went seining. I really enjoyed this trip and learned a lot! If you know my father, you know that we as a family love to go to as many National Parks as we can and over the years I have developed an affinity for the parks and visitor's centers. Getting Ready!

I am so not ready to go. I leave tomorrow. I am so not ready to go. Don't get me wrong, I am very excited to be in Maryland, but the whole process of getting there is stressing me out. I have never flown and I am very nervous about my full day of travel. Once I am in Maryland I hope that I will be able to clam down and enjoy the experience but first I have to get to there. Trying to pack your life in two suitcases is a lot harder than I thought it would be. Things like laundry soap and enough shampoo for over 2 months are essential items but they are also items that take up quite a bit of space in my suitcase.  If nothing else, this experience has taught me that I own too much stuff! I leave tomorrow morning at some ridiculous time (around 4am) to drive to the OKC airport. From there I fly to Dallas then to Philadelphia then to Maryland.  For a girl who has never flown I feel like I will be a pro after this trip!
