Kate Conquers the Beach!

Happy Fourth of July everyone! I enjoyed my holiday so much and hope that you all did too!

When I was preparing for this internship I was worried about what I would end up doing for the Fourth. Would I hang out with friends or maybe church family? Would I even see fireworks? My parents kept assuring me that the interns would find something to do and although I did not believe them they ended up being right!
Twelve of the fourteen interns all hopped in the two vehicles we have and headed for Ocean City, Maryland. Ocean City is about an hour away and is a huge tourist destination. There is a boardwalk right on the beach with tons of cute shops and places to eat and then there is so much beach area! We decided to go there because we figured everyone could find something to do and it wasn't too far of a drive.
We left campus in the morning to avoid traffic and in hopes of finding parking. We arrived at Ocean City around 10am and after driving around for a bit we found reasonably priced parking. We headed to the beach to set up camp after that. Everyone was anxious to get in the water as soon as we got there but it was so cold!! We did all end up in the water after awhile though. I even got in the water! I was pretty proud of myself because not only were my feet in the Atlantic Ocean but my entire body! After about an hour in the water the girls decided to go dry off and lay out on the beach for awhile as the boys walked the boardwalk. We met back up in the water a couple hours later and once again I was totally submerged in the water! The waves were more intense this time round and I ended up on the ocean floor after a wave carried me all the way to shore! This was a little scary but I got back up and rejoined my friends further out! After another hour or so of water fun the girls decided to eat a quick lunch and then take our turn on the boardwalk!
The boardwalk in Ocean City is huge! There are a ton of candy shops, gift stores, and places to grab a bite to eat. We walked in and out of a bunch of places and ended up at a cute store called The Kite Loft. We loved this place and I ended up buying a gift for all of family members here! We continued on the boardwalk for a while but eventually our feet got tired and we found ourselves in the water again!
This time when we were in the water it was high tide. The waves were crazy and took me for quite the ride! I ended up tumbling to shore under waves a couple of times but again I went back out to my friends. I am so glad that I actually went out in the water and although it is not my favorite place I am getting more comfortable on the beach!
We laid out on the beach for awhile longer and I thoroughly enjoyed soaking up the sun! Next, we split up to grab some dinner and then walked around the boardwalk again as it was getting dark. There were a ton of people by this time but we still had fun as we walked through the crowds. I decided to splurge and get a treat and ended up at at an ice cream place called Dumser's.  Apparently, Dumser's created the orange swirl soft serve so I had to try it and it was pretty good! After grabbing some treats we headed back to the beach for the fireworks.
The fireworks were incredible and it felt so surreal to sit on the beach with friends and watch the show! We ended the night sitting in traffic before we got on the highway and as we were sitting there we rolled our windows down and listened to some good music. At one point we were at a stop light and there was a car sitting parallel to us. We both had our windows down and could literally touch each other if we stuck our arms out the window. At that moment we started playing the National Anthem and the people in our car were all singing along. At first, the people in the other car were looking at s like we were crazy but they eventually sand along with us! It was so fun! I am so glad that we went out yesterday and that I stepped out of comfort zone to enjoy the adventure!
I am so grateful for the men and women who have served or who are currently serving. Their selflessness is what we celebrate on July 4 and what we should celebrate every day of the year!

Vitamin D

Hi friends! I have already spent a week in Maryland and it is going by so fast! My new friends are amazing and everyday I look forward to hanging out with them in the evenings. My research is coming along but it is taking time and I am trying my best to be positive about what the results might be. Campus is pretty and although I still get lost I like it a lot.      This Saturday we went canoeing in the morning, played basketball in the afternoon, and went for a run with some of my gal pals in the evening. I love spending time in the sun and enjoyed my Saturday so much! Canoeing was a little scary, but for my first time I think I did pretty good! My arms are extremely sore but it is a good sore. I am learning so much and loving every new experience! I have played pool, softball, and basketball which are all things that I do not do very often but have had a good time doing!     This Sunday I got to go to church in Salisbury. It was nice to d...
