Well, I was supposed to go out on a boat yesterday, (Tuesday June 13) but that did not happen. Two mentors and three students, including myself, drove 45 minutes to a lab that is right by the bay and is owned by UMES. Once we got there the boat captain said that there were too many people to go on the boat and one of us had to stay at the lab. When the captain found out that I hadn't ever been on a boat in the ocean he told me to stay at the lab. At first I was really annoyed by this because I had planned to go out on a boat and now I was stuck in an office for 6 + hours with literally nothing to do. I was trying to figure out if there was anything productive I could do when I saw one of the other interns and her grad student mentor walk in. I asked if I could possibly tag along with them for the day and the grad student graciously agreed. I was so grateful that they happened to be at the lab that day and that they were willing to take me with them. While in the lab I was able to help make fish food for an experiment, dissect multiple fish, and learn some really neat stuff. I forgot how much I miss being in a lab and really loved every minute of my time at the coastal lab. Unfortunately, as far as I know, I will not be spending much time in a lab for my project and will have to wait to get back to Oklahoma before I get back into the lab regularly.
This week has been filled with fun evenings. We had a bonfire where everyone just talked and had a good time. I got to teach people how to two-step and really just enjoyed our new friendships. This weekend is free for the interns (meaning we do not have anywhere we are required to be) so we are planning another bonfire and a trip to one of the cities near here.
I am working diligently on analyzing the data about blue crabs. This is a very long, time-consuming, and tedious process but I like that I can see progress after each step.
This week is going by so fast and I can only imagine that the rest of this experience will be done in a blink of an eye!
