Hi guys! I am enjoying my time here in Maryland and have been surprised at how quickly we have jumped in. June 6 was a complete orientation day. We learned each other's names, got some what acquainted with campus, and filled out a bunch of paper work. All of the interns are really cool. There are 8 girls and 6 boys. We all live on the first floor of a dorm room called Court Plaza and are split between two halls by genders (so Grandma, you don't have to worry;)). About half of the other students are from around Maryland, but there is a girl from Puerto Rico, a girl from Texas, a guy from California and a guy from Chicago. It has been neat to talk with everyone and get to know each other a little better.
I was able to meet with my mentor yesterday. Her name is Dr. Enjiro Mayor and she is from Nigeria. I will be working closely with her for the next ten weeks. We have decided to do our research on the distribution of blue crabs across the Maryland Coastal Bays. As of right now, I am not sure what exactly I will be doing every day, but I will hopefully be going out in the field quite often. I am excited about this project because it is something that I have never been exposed to since I live in Oklahoma. Right now I am reading a lot of other research projects that correlate with the project I am planning on executing. This is the first step in any research project and it is very important. I have just over a week to get a proposal written - this includes having my reading done, having a plan, and getting that plan on paper. Proposal writing usually takes a lot longer than a week, but since we have such limited time we have to have a product before it is perfected. As the internship continues we will continue to update and reevaluate our proposals with the help of our mentors.
In other news, it is way colder here than it is in Oklahoma. I have had to wear a jacket everywhere I go and Wednesday it was 57 degrees! This is totally weird to me since it is 90 degrees in Oklahoma right now! Our dorm room is also frigidly cold so I have to stay bundled up inside. As it gets later in the summer I am sure it will warm up and it will feel more like what I am used to.
On Wednesday, the interns were all able to hang out and get to know each other better. We have all made fast friends and enjoy spending time together in the evenings just hanging out and chatting. Everyone is so different in their backgrounds and upbringings and I learn something new everyday! Everyone I talk to asks about Oklahoma so if you have any fun facts about my great home state please leave them in the comments section so I can share the info! Over all I am really enjoying this program so far and am really looking forward to getting deeper into the research!
