One day in 2008, I remember getting up and getting ready for elementary school. I walked out to the living room and on the television was the morning news. The newscasters announced that "Gordon Hinkley had passed away." President Hinkley was the first President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that I remember and I didn't know how to feel about him dying. Well, with President Hinkley's death, Thomas S. Monson became the prophet who would give me advice and strength through some of the pivotal years of my life.
On January 2, 2018, President Monson passed away peacefully and returned to his Heavenly Father and his sweet wife. Before he left this Earth, President Monson gave us some amazing pieces of advice and I want to share some of my favorite quotes from the 16th modern day prophet!!
1. "Every day of your life is a special occasion." - I love this quote!! It is so easy to forget that every single day is honestly and truly a blessing. This is the perfect quote to put somewhere that you can see each morning!
2. "Help is a prayer away." - My high school years were not the easiest for me and this quote is what I needed to hear during those rough times. Sometimes I would feel all alone and it would seem like I had no one on my side, but the help that I needed and craved was only a prayer away and President Monson reminded me of that!
3. "Decisions determine destiny." - I think that every member of the church remembers the man who was the prophet during their adolescent years because you have a lot of important decisions to make during those years. These three words were President Monson's reminder of the weight of some of those decisions. We shouldn't make decisions lightly because these choices could have eternal consequences.
4. "So much in life depends on our attitude." - Humans like to blame our situations on everyone but ourselves. We hold anger and resentment in our hearts when we would feel so much better if we just had a positive outlook on whatever situation we are in!
5. "Always have the temple in your sights." - The Oklahoma City temple has always been my temple, but recently, the temple has been closed for some renovations. Now, the temple in Dallas, Texas is the temple that is closest and easiest to attend. I didn't realize that these renovations would have such an effect on me. I love the temple. I miss the OKC temple but I am SO grateful that there is another temple so close!!
I love President Monson and I will always remember the advice that he gave me as he was the prophet. I will miss hearing him speak at General Conference but I am excited to hear all of the great advice President Nelson has for us!
